Who is Karoline Leavitt? Former aide of Donald Trump Karoline Leavitt wins New Hampshire's 1st Congressional district.
25-year-old former Trump aide wins GOP primary in New Hampshire.
Generation Z now has two candidates with a chance of heading to Congress. On Tuesday, 25-year-old Karoline Leavitt won the Republican nomination in New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District, CBS News projected, propelling her to face off against Democratic incumbent Rep. Chris Pappas in November.
"We were outspent, but we were NOT outworked," Leavitt tweeted after her victory. "Thank you to the people of my home district for believing in me! I am humbled by the outpouring of support. ... Tonight, we celebrate. Tomorrow, the work continues."
Leavitt, 25, is the second Generation Z candidate to win a primary this season, along with progressive Maxwell Frost, and is hoping to flip the swing district for Republicans. Though she touted a number of high-profile endorsements herself, Leavitt overcame the majority of Republican leadership backing her opponent in Tuesday's primary.
Leavitt will now face off against incumbent Democrat Chris Pappas, 42, to represent the district — a toss-up seat Republicans hope to flip as part of their goal of winning back the majority of seats in the House.
"They said I was too young, we could never raise the money to compete, and that we could never beat a former Republican nominee," Leavitt said in her victory speech Tuesday night.
"Over the last year we were outspent but we were not outworked," she exclaimed. "No way!"
Leavitt defeated former Trump State Department official Matt Mowers, 33, who ran for the seat in 2020 and lost to Pappas by 5 percentage points.
Mowers released a statement in which he pledged to "never stop fighting" for middle class families.
She touted her age as an asset that sets her apart in the field Tuesday night.
“Tonight, we made history. And I look forward to serving as the youngest congresswoman in United States history when we beat Chris Pappas,” she said. “As many of you know, my youth is one of the many reasons that I felt compelled to run for Congress in the first place. Because it’s my generation of Americans, your children, your grandchildren, who are not being served well by the current state of our education system, our media, and our entire culture.”
