Ana de Armas Knows Her ‘Blonde’ Nude Scenes Will Go Viral: ‘It’s Disgusting’.Shocking ‘Blonde’ follows brutal life of Marilyn Monroe.
Ana de Armas Says It’s ‘Disgusting’ That ‘Blonde’ Nudity Will Circulate the Internet, but ‘I Can’t Control It.
Ana de Armas is earning some of the best reviews of her career for her performance as Marilyn Monroe in Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde,” and yet she’s well aware that it will be her nude scenes that end up getting the most exposure online. As the actor said during her Variety cover story interview, “I know what’s going to go viral, and it’s disgusting.”
“Blonde” is set to stream globally on Netflix starting Sept. 28, which means viewers will have the ability to clip scenes from the film or take screenshots and share them online. De Armas expects her nude scenes to circulate widely online, but that reception to the film never scared her off from taking on the role of Monroe.
Just like Marilyn Monroe, Ana de Armas knows she cannot control what America does with her body.
De Armas stars as the late bombshell in Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde,” an NC-17 portrait of the iconic film star. De Armas bares all for the film, emotionally and physically, spending long sequences topless and, at one point, fully nude.
“I did things in this movie I would have never done for anyone else, ever,” de Armas told Variety. “I did it for her, and I did it for Andrew.”
“I know what’s going to go viral, and it’s disgusting,” de Armas explained. “It’s upsetting just to think about it. I can’t control it; you can’t really control what they do and how they take things out of context.”
She added, “I don’t think it gave me second thoughts; it just gave me a bad taste to think about the future of those clips.”
“Blonde” director Dominik noted that “in a way, Ana’s not aware of how good she is” as Monroe onscreen. “Certainly, when we were shooting the film, I don’t think she had an inkling of how extraordinary it really was,” the writer/director said.
De Armas noted that she could “feel” Monroe “in my body” while on set, and even felt Monroe’s presence on set after visiting her grave in Los Angeles. As for the nudity onscreen, de Armas told L’Officiel that “Blonde” is far less explicit than other films.
“Blonde”: Subtlety is nowhere to be found in screenwriter/director Andrew Dominik’s hypnotic, innovative and occasionally brilliant American horror story reimagining of the rise and fall of Norma Jeane Baker/Marilyn Monroe.
Epic in ambition and length (it clocks in at 2 hours, 46 minutes), it’s a visually arresting and disturbing blurry nightmare on the destruction and deconstruction of Monroe, who was lasciviously played off as a “sexpot” and yet was a vulnerable person abused and let down by a litany of men, including an absent, unknown father.
Ana de Armas hurls herself into the challenging role others have played and couldn’t be better, reflecting the splintered torment roiling inside the actor who dazzled in “Some Like It Hot,” “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” and so on. The abundant symbolic images of mirrors make it crystal clear the intentions of Dominik and author Joyce Carol Oates, who wrote the praised 2000 fictional novel the Netflix film is based on.
“Blonde” is undeniably powerful when it comes to hitting on that point, and even though it overstates itself, the abundant talent at work here, including Nick Cave and Warren Ellis (score) and the hair, makeup, costume and production design crew, not to mention the terrific cast, is undeniable. Dominik’s take has its faults, but its unorthodox style and ambition make it leagues more intriguing and meaningful than the standard, play-it-safe biopic. Details: 3 stars our of 4; in select theaters Sept. 24 and available on Netflix Sept. 26.
